El pueblo australiano rechazó una propuesta para reconocer a los aborígenes en su Constitución.
El referéndum del sábado pretendía fomentar las relaciones amistosas y resolver los problemas, pero fracasó. Para tener éxito, era necesario obtener tanto la mayoría de los votos nacionales como mayorías en cuatro de los seis estados de Australia. Esto se considera un golpe para los avances en la lucha contra la discriminación y la mejora de la situación sanitaria y económica de los indígenas.
Más de 17 millones de australianos tenían derecho a votar, y muchas personas visitaron las embajadas de todo el mundo. Algunas personas y políticos lucharon denodadamente por mejorar la situación de los indígenas, pero no tuvieron éxito.
