Un vídeo difundido en las redes sociales mostraba a un hombre saltando de un barco y tocando a una orca. Otras personas que aparecían en el vídeo se reían y vitoreaban. El incidente ocurrió cerca de Devonport, Auckland, cuando una orca macho y una cría nadaban cerca del barco.
Las orcas son muy importantes en Nueva Zelanda y están en grave peligro de extinción. Quedan menos de 200 animales. Es ilegal molestarlas o nadar con ellas. Nueva Zelanda multó al hombre de 50 años con 600 dólares por intentar tocar al animal. Las autoridades dijeron que las acciones del hombre eran muy peligrosas tanto para él como para la orca. Por suerte, los animales no resultaron heridos.
