Hace 37 años, el 26 de abril, se produjo la peor catástrofe nuclear de la historia y provocó contaminación radiactiva en Europa Oriental.
La central nuclear de Chernóbil está situada a unos 100 kilómetros al norte de Kiev. El accidente ocurrió durante una prueba de seguridad en el cuarto reactor de la central. La explosión envió material nuclear por toda Europa. 31 personas murieron inmediatamente y hasta 115.000 personas murieron de enfermedades relacionadas con la radiación. Decenas de miles de personas tuvieron que abandonar sus hogares. La semana pasada, antiguos trabajadores y supervivientes recordaron el aniversario con una vigilia nocturna.
El presidente de Ucrania, Volodymyr Zelensky, advirtió de que Rusia estaba utilizando las centrales nucleares como una forma de amenazar al mundo. Durante el primer día de la invasión rusa de Ucrania, sus tropas tomaron Chernóbil y permanecieron allí durante un mes antes de marcharse.
