Fallece el patriarca Ilia II – nivel 3

El líder de la Iglesia Ortodoxa Georgiana, el patriarca Ilia II, falleció a los 93 años. Dirigió esta poderosa institución durante casi cincuenta años y fue una figura muy importante en su país.

Asumió el liderazgo en 1977, cuando Georgia aún formaba parte de la Unión Soviética. En aquella época, el Estado restringía las prácticas religiosas, pero él ayudó a que la Iglesia creciera y ganara influencia. Ilia II era muy respetado porque contribuyó a mantener la estabilidad del país en tiempos políticos difíciles. A menudo actuaba como mediador entre diferentes grupos para evitar conflictos. La Iglesia ha anunciado que falleció en un hospital tras una grave enfermedad.

En los próximos dos meses se elegirá a un nuevo líder para ocupar su puesto. Bajo su liderazgo, la Iglesia georgiana se acercó mucho al Estado y cobró mayor importancia en la vida pública. Su muerte supone una gran pérdida para la Iglesia Ortodoxa y para el pueblo de Georgia, que lo veía como un padre espiritual.
