En 1848, el obrero de la construcción Phineas Gage tiene un grave accidente. Una barra de hierro le atraviesa la cabeza y le hiere la parte frontal del cerebro. Gage no muere, pero su personalidad cambia. Ya no es amable ni organizado.

Este suceso es importante para los médicos. Demuestra que el cerebro y la personalidad están conectados con algunas partes del cerebro. Más tarde, Gage encuentra trabajo en Chile. Su trabajo es repetitivo. Para Gage, es una terapia. Su cerebro debe aprender a funcionar de otra manera. Los médicos aprenden que el cerebro puede cambiar.

El accidente de Gage inicia un nuevo campo de la neurociencia. Nos enseña que el cerebro puede adaptarse y recuperarse de lesiones graves.
