El Acuerdo de Schengen permite a personas y mercancías circular libremente por muchos países europeos sin controles fronterizos.

Lleva 40 años en vigor y es una pieza clave de la Unión Europea. Sin embargo, países como Alemania y Francia han empezado recientemente a restablecer los controles fronterizos. Dicen que se debe a la inmigración irregular, a la presión sobre los sistemas de asilo y a la preocupación por la seguridad y el terrorismo. Los expertos afirman que estos controles pueden ser legales según las normas de Schengen, pero sólo deben ser temporales y por razones específicas. Algunos expertos sostienen que los países utilizan los controles fronterizos con fines políticos, no por amenazas reales. Estas acciones pueden ir en contra de los valores de unidad y cooperación que defiende la UE.

Un profesor de Derecho explica que, aunque muchas partes de Schengen siguen funcionando bien, el problema visible es el retorno de los controles en las fronteras interiores. Esto plantea dudas sobre lo bien que puede funcionar Schengen si los países ya no respetan plenamente el acuerdo.
