El 28 de febrero de 2025, el presidente ucraniano Volodymyr Zelenskyy se reunió con el presidente estadounidense Donald Trump en Washington D.C. Querían llegar a un acuerdo sobre minerales que permitiera a EEUU obtener los minerales de tierras raras de Ucrania.
Pero la reunión no fue bien. Zelenskyy advirtió a Trump que no confiara en el presidente ruso Vladimir Putin porque Rusia ya había incumplido promesas anteriormente. El vicepresidente de Trump, JD Vance, dijo que Zelenskyy no era respetuoso, y Trump interrumpió la reunión.
Más tarde, Trump dijo que comprobaría si Ucrania debía seguir recibiendo ayuda militar estadounidense. Algunos líderes europeos apoyaron a Ucrania y dijeron que Rusia era el problema. Los líderes francés y alemán prometieron ayudar a Ucrania. Incluso después de la discusión, Zelenskyy esperaba volver a hablar con EEUU.
