Un tratado internacional mantiene a salvo la Antártida, pero puede que no dure para siempre.
Los científicos están estudiando la contaminación y el cambio climático, pero otras investigaciones han descubierto algo importante: grandes cantidades de petróleo bajo el mar de Weddell. Podría haber petróleo por valor de billones de dólares, y a mucha gente le preocupa que las empresas quieran perforar allí.
El Tratado Antártico dice que no están permitidas las perforaciones petrolíferas, pero los países volverán a revisar esta norma en 2048. Muchos países reclaman partes de la Antártida, lo que podría causar problemas. Al mismo tiempo, el cambio climático, la contaminación y la sobrepesca ya están perjudicando al continente. Algunas personas creen que el tratado es lo suficientemente fuerte como para proteger la Antártida. Otros temen que el dinero y la política ganen también allí.
