Cada persona tiene un código genético. Un código es una lista de letras. El código genético está dentro de tu cuerpo. Le dice a tu cuerpo y a tu cerebro cómo crecer.

Cada código genético tiene tres mil millones de letras. Están en un orden concreto. A veces, el orden de las letras cambia. Este cambio se denomina variación.

Los científicos estudian estas variaciones. Las personas de una misma familia pueden tener variaciones similares. Esta situación nos indica si alguien es pariente nuestro.

Las empresas de pruebas genéticas leen el código genético. Lo hacen por distintos motivos. Por ejemplo, un niño adoptado quiere encontrar a sus padres. A veces, los padres quieren saber si su bebé estará sano. También, una persona puede saber si tendrá una enfermedad. Por estas razones, las pruebas genéticas cambian la vida de las personas.
