La victoria del socialdemócrata Peter Pellegrini en las elecciones presidenciales de Eslovaquia ha reforzado al partido gobernante dirigido por Robert Fico.
El partido de Fico se considera euroescéptico y alineado con la narrativa rusa, y ahora tanto el gobierno como el presidente pertenecerán al mismo espectro político. La campaña de Pellegrini se centró en prometer estabilidad al gobierno si resultaba elegido, ya que es un líder clave de la coalición. Prometió no obstaculizar la agenda del gobierno. Su oponente, Ivan Korčok, acusó a Pellegrini de arriesgar la participación de Eslovaquia en la guerra al apoyar a Ucrania. Sin embargo, Pellegrini aún no ha definido claramente su postura sobre diversas cuestiones. Pellegrini expresa sentimientos proeuropeos, pero también hace hincapié en la protección de los intereses eslovacos.
La victoria de Pellegrini, con el 54% de los votos, hace temer que Eslovaquia se alinee en el futuro con las tendencias populistas, de forma similar a la Hungría de Viktor Orbán.
