El apéndice del cuerpo es el pequeño tubo que está unido a nuestro intestino grueso, y está situado en la parte inferior derecha de nuestro vientre.
Los científicos están de acuerdo en que el apéndice podría ser un órgano sobrante de la evolución humana, y se le da poco crédito porque, en general, la gente puede vivir sin él. Sin embargo, un estudio publicado en 2007 sugiere que el apéndice podría ayudar en la digestión. Los investigadores descubrieron que el apéndice ayuda a almacenar microbios buenos que digieren los alimentos. Estas bacterias buenas abandonan nuestro cuerpo cuando estamos enfermos, y el apéndice libera más cantidad de ellas.
Otro estudio sugiere que el apéndice refuerza nuestra inmunidad. Contiene células linfoides que ayudan al organismo a combatir las infecciones. Las personas sin apéndice tienen más probabilidades de sufrir una enfermedad grave si contraen una infección por bacterias que causan diarrea e inflamación del colon.
