Otra teoría es del siglo VI, cuando una plaga asoló Europa, y el Papa Gregorio I ordenó formalmente a la gente que gritara bendiciones para proteger a quien estornudara. Del mismo modo, en el siglo XIV, durante la peste bubónica, estornudar era señal de que una persona podía estar enferma de peste.
