El mayor crucero del mundo, el Icon of the Seas, está listo para su primer viaje. Utiliza gas natural licuado (GNL).
El GNL es más limpio que el combustible que utilizan normalmente los barcos, pero a algunos expertos les preocupan las emisiones de metano. El barco tiene capacidad para 8.000 pasajeros y 20 cubiertas. Este tipo de cruceros son cada vez más populares.
El Consejo Internacional de Transporte Limpio afirma que el GNL puede producir más de un 120% más de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero que el combustible habitual. Royal Caribbean afirma que el barco producirá menos emisiones de lo habitual, pero los grupos ecologistas piden que se examinen e investiguen detenidamente las repercusiones de los cruceros alimentados con GNL.
