En 1913, los trabajadores inundaron el lago Gatún para construir el Canal de Panamá. El canal se convirtió en un importante enlace entre los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico para los negocios mundiales.

Pero el cambio climático, y especialmente El Niño, provocó uno de los años más secos registrados en el canal durante la estación de lluvias. Incluso es posible ver árboles que sobresalen del agua. El bajo nivel del agua supone problemas para los grandes barcos que quieren pasar por allí, lo que repercute en el comercio mundial. Algunos barcos tienen que rodear ahora el Cabo de Buena Esperanza o el Canal de Suez. Otros pujan por el acceso al canal, lo que provoca retrasos y mayores costes de transporte.

Parece que la situación empeorará aún más en el futuro porque probablemente lloverá aún más en la zona. No está claro cómo resolver este problema y si es siquiera posible, porque costaría mucho dinero.
