Sudáfrica consiguió la primera victoria de su historia en la Copa Mundial Femenina de la FIFA con una emocionante victoria por 3-2 sobre Italia, avanzando así a los octavos de final del torneo.

Thembi Kgatlana marcó el gol de la victoria en el tiempo añadido, aplastando las esperanzas de Italia de avanzar con sólo un empate. Antes, Italia se había adelantado mediante un penalti, pero un gol en propia meta ayudó a Sudáfrica a igualar el marcador. En la segunda parte, Sudáfrica se adelantó, pero Italia empató en un saque de esquina. Al final, la hazaña de Kgatlana selló la victoria sudafricana. La seleccionadora Desiree Ellis elogió el espíritu de lucha de su equipo y su histórico logro.
