El primer presidente gay de la UE – nivel 3

Edgars Rinkevics, ex ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de Letonia, ha jurado su cargo como presidente del país, convirtiéndose en el primer jefe de Estado abiertamente homosexual de la Unión Europea.
Aunque su función es principalmente ceremonial, el presidente tiene poder para vetar leyes y convocar referendos. Rinkevics, que salió del armario públicamente en 2014, ha sido un firme defensor de los derechos LGBT. A pesar de que el matrimonio homosexual es ilegal en Letonia, el Tribunal Constitucional reconoció las uniones entre personas del mismo sexo el año pasado.
En su discurso de investidura, Rinkevics se comprometió a apoyar a Ucrania en su conflicto con Rusia e hizo hincapié en la necesidad de abordar la desigualdad social. Expresó su compromiso de crear una Letonia moderna, justa e integradora. Rinkevics sucede a Egils Levits y representará a Letonia en la próxima cumbre de la OTAN en Vilna, Lituania.
