La semana pasada, Gran Bretaña celebró el 75 aniversario de la llegada del primer barco procedente del Caribe a los muelles de Tilbury, en Essex.
A bordo del HMT Empire Windrush iban cientos de emigrantes que llegaron a Gran Bretaña el 22 de junio de 1948 para ayudar a reconstruir el país tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Muchos más caribeños les seguirían en los años siguientes, y aportaron una importante contribución a la cultura británica moderna.
Hubo bailes, cantos y celebraciones en los servicios religiosos de Windsor, la catedral de Southwark y la estación londinense de Waterloo. El rey Carlos reconoció la inconmensurable diferencia marcada por la generación Windrush.
Sin embargo, también hubo rabia y dolor. Este año se cumplen cinco años del escándalo Windrush, que llevó a miles de personas a ser detenidas y deportadas a pesar de tener todo el derecho a vivir en el Reino Unido.
