La semana pasada, Gran Bretaña conmemoró el 75 aniversario de la llegada del primer barco procedente del Caribe a los muelles de Tilbury, en Essex.
El barco, llamado HMT Empire Windrush, trajo a cientos de emigrantes el 22 de junio de 1948, que vinieron a ayudar a reconstruir Gran Bretaña tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Muchos más caribeños llegaron en los años siguientes y contribuyeron en gran medida a la cultura británica moderna. Los servicios en Windsor, la catedral de Southwark y la estación londinense de Waterloo estuvieron llenos de bailes, cantos y celebraciones. El rey Carlos dijo que la generación Windrush tuvo un gran impacto en Gran Bretaña.
Pero este año también se cumplieron cinco años del escándalo Windrush, que detuvo y deportó injustamente a miles de personas que tenían todo el derecho a vivir en el Reino Unido.
