La idea de la Web oscura suele traer a la mente imágenes de hackers con capucha en sótanos oscuros, como una especie de economía paralela o los Illuminati de Internet. Sin embargo, la realidad es más mundana e insidiosa.

Para acceder a la web oscura, necesitas un software de anonimato, como Tor, desarrollado inicialmente por el gobierno estadounidense para proteger las comunicaciones militares. La web oscura irrumpió por primera vez en la conciencia popular con los estupefacientes; sin embargo, las fuerzas de seguridad están cerrando los mercados de drogas más rápidamente y con mayor regularidad. Luego están las herramientas de hacking, donde puedes comprar malware o distintas herramientas de phishing. También hay datos personales filtrados por hackeos, la gente vende listas de direcciones de correo electrónico, números de la seguridad social, contraseñas, nombres de usuario, etc. Si alguna vez recibes spam o correos electrónicos de phishing, es muy probable que tus datos hayan sido comprados en la web oscura.

Lo más alarmante y quizá la mayor parte de esta economía es el material de abusos sexuales a menores. En el último año, se han cerrado tres grandes mercados y se ha detenido a cientos de personas basándose en pruebas que dejaron en Internet.
