Australia encuentra un barco de la 2ª Guerra Mundial – nivel 2

El ministro de Defensa de Australia, Richard Marles, informó de que Australia descubrió el SS Montevideo Maru.
Era un barco japonés que se hundió durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial con 864 soldados australianos a bordo. El barco se hundió en el Mar de China Meridional, al noroeste de la isla de Luzón, y puso fin a una triste parte de la historia australiana. Un submarino estadounidense torpedeó el barco en julio de 1942 cuando viajaba de Papúa Nueva Guinea a la china Hainan. Los estadounidenses no sabían que había prisioneros de guerra a bordo.
Soldados australianos y un grupo de científicos oceánicos encontraron el barco hundido a más de 4.000 metros de profundidad. Más de 1.000 personas, entre prisioneros de guerra y civiles de distintos países, perdieron la vida en el incidente.
